[edit] History
Born as a Major League Baseball expansion club in 1977, the Jays went through the usual expansion woes before emerging in the mid-1980s as a perpetual contender. They dominated the majors in the early 1990s, winning two World Series, drawing huge crowds to Toronto's gargantuan Skydome and signing free agents at will. After the mid-90s various factors converged to turn the team into a long-haul mediocrity.
The Blue Jay nickname, a natural complement to the ancient Cardinal and Oriole names, was briefly used by the Phillies during the Second World War but didn't catch on. The long-lived Toronto International League franchise (1895-1967) was called the Maple Leafs.
Following the departure of the Expos to Washington DC in 2005, the Blue Jays became the sole Canadian franchise in MLB. That same year the Skydome was renamed to the Rogers Centre in honor of its new corporate owner, Rogers Communications Inc.
