Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim
From Wiki Gonzalez
Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim is the official name of the Major League Baseball team generally known as the Angels.
[edit] FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
[edit] Why are the Angels called the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim?
When he purchased the team, owner Arte Moreno noted that media rights to the team were far too low for its market. He decided that this was because advertisers were less inclined to pay high rates for Angels games because they believed they would only be reaching a small audience -- an Anaheim-sized audience. However, as Orange County is served by the Los Angeles media market -- the team's games are broadcast on LA stations and reported on in LA newspapers -- Arte wanted to emphasize to advertisers that they were reaching a far larger market. He concluded that the way to do this was to introduce "Los Angeles" into the team name.
[edit] Is the name incorrect because they don't play in Los Angeles?
In the NFL, the Rams moved from Los Angeles to Anaheim without changing their name, and neither the Giants nor Jets even play in the state of New York. Many sports teams adopt the name of a neighboring metropolis instead of that of their actual physical location.
Also, for its first five years the team did play in the City of Los Angeles before moving to Anaheim.
[edit] What's the deal with "of Anaheim"?
When Disney bought a controlling interest of the team, the City of Anaheim put in a condition that the team name include the word "Anaheim." The contract did not specify that the team had to be called the "Anaheim Angels." Arte took advantage of this loophole by appending "of Anaheim" to the team name, thereby satisfying the letter of the agreement, if not its spirit.
The city of Anaheim has hired lawyers to try to make the team use "Anaheim Angels," per the spirit of the agreement, but to date they have unable to get their way in court because the contract hasn't actually been breached.
[edit] Are the Angels putting "Los Angeles" on their merchandise?
When the name change was made, the Angels announced no plans to introduce merchandise with "Los Angeles" included. In fact, Arte has pursued a strategy of branding "Angels Baseball" without reference to any geographic location. For example, http://www.angelsbaseball.com is used as the team's official site, and the team uniforms and caps use just the Angels wordmark and the "A" lettering.
[edit] How is the name rendered into Spanish?
In Spanish, the literally translated name --"Los Ángeles de Los Ángeles de Anaheim" -- is redundant twice in just seven words, which may be a world record*. It's also very funny.
However, Spanish-speaking baseball fans do not directly translate the "Angels" part from English, so the team is actually referred to as "Los Angelinos de Los Ángeles de Anaheim," "Los Angelinos de Los Ángeles," "Los Serafines de Anaheim," or most generally "Los Serafines," which isn't quite as funny.
- Of course, Los Angeles is also home to The La Brea Tar Pits, which translates to "The The Tar Tar Pits." This is just something that happens when you have locations named in languages that are not the primary language of the location.
[edit] Does any of this make sense?
It's hard to believe that advertisers are too stupid to understand that the Angels are broadcast on Los Angeles stations. Despite a backlash from many over the cumbersome nature of the name, as well as some Anaheim residents and Los Angeles residents (many of whom reject the fact that the San Fernando Valley is part of the city, despite the fact that they disallowed the Valley from seceding), no one really cares about the name.
